Re: New Vice President

I am delighted to announce that Dexter A. Bailey, Jr., senior vice president for advancement and executive director of the Stony Brook Foundation since 2011, will join Caltech as vice president for advancement and alumni relations effective July 15, 2019.

In this pivotal role, Dexter will represent the Institute to the world, strengthening relationships with graduates and friends of Caltech, and generating resources that permit the Institute to realize its intertwined missions of research and education.

A nationally recognized advancement leader, Dexter has more than 25 years of experience across the public and private sectors of higher education. He recently launched and completed the largest campaign in the history of the State University of New York system, and more than doubled annual giving at SUNY Stony Brook. In April, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) recognized Dexter with its prestigious Commonfund Institutionally Related Foundation Award, which recognizes professionals who make extraordinary contributions to the advancement, quality, and effectiveness of their foundations and their sector.

Prior to Stony Brook, Dexter served as vice president for development and alumni relations at Worcester Polytechnic Institute; as executive associate athletic director, responsible for a stadium campaign, at UC Berkeley; and as director of development for the University of Washington School of Law. Dexter began his professional career as press secretary for the Ohio House of Representatives. He holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Ohio University and an MBA from the University of Toledo. Dexter is an active senior member of CASE and a sought-after national speaker.

I am grateful to the search committee that screened a large slate of candidates from across the nation, recommending Dexter as the preeminent person for the position. The committee, chaired by Vice President for Strategy Implementation Diana Jergovic and staffed by Hillary Downs, included four Caltech faculty members: Aaron Ames, Simona Bordoni, Peter Dervan, and Nai-Chang Yeh; and four members of the Institute staff: Scott Richland, Margo Steurbaut, David Dayan, and Fred Farina.

Since October 2018, Diana has guided Caltech’s advancement effort with remarkable dedication and skill in her additional capacity as acting vice president for development and institute relations. She and colleagues already have recorded the best fundraising year of the campaign, with a quarter to go in the fiscal year. Please join me in thanking and congratulating Diana and DIR as we look forward to Dexter’s arrival.
